I just got back from our family vacation to Yellowstone and the Tetons. We had a great time. The scenery is a photographers dream.
It was a little tough at times to balance my desire to just 'shoot' and spend time with the family.
So far I have only processed the first day which was awesome. I was on sensory overload between the landscapes and wildlife. Wildflowers were also blooming in many parts.
Waterfalls, Bison and Bears! Oh, my!! (foxes and sheep, too!)
Can't wait to see more!

I've been waiting for these!! I have to agree, what a gorgeous place to take pictures!! Sorry we couldn't hookup, maybe in October when I return to Colorado?

Mike,
Did you make it to the park as well? I had no cell phone coverage or internet. Oh well, the sheer beauty of both places was more than I could ask for.
Scott, I took *sooo* many pictures and don't feel I really did it justice. But considering I was there to spend time with my wife and three chillins' I am happy overall with the results.
There were many occasions when I didn't have my tripod available or the right lens. My kids and wife took more hikes with me than they ever had.
One of the most amazing part was the great light, clouds and color throughout the day, not just during morning and afternoon light.

Derek, I left you a voice message saying I didn't think we get to get together, for I wasn't arriving at Yellowstone until the Wednseday you were leaving for the Tetons.
We are on our way to the Rockies, Yankees game, in our red Sox garb, so I'll try to post some of my images tonight or tomorrow. Oh hell, here's one now!!

Derek,
Looks like you had a nice trip. I bet your family had a great time. Looks like you had some nice conditions. It will be fun to see what else you got.
BTW, I went up to Harrison flat with Jesse last weekend. I'll post more about it soon, but you'll love it when you get a chance to go up there!
Glad to hear you made up to Harrison Flat. Maybe we can head back up there if you are interested sometime.
BTW, All of my wide-super wide shots were taken with the Tokina 12-24. It is truly a great lens for cropped bodies. I couldn't be happier with it. I would say it is on par with my Canon 70-200L in terms of color, contrast and general pop.
Wonderful stuff, Derek. What a grand place to visit. I was there in May and split 5 days between Yellowstone and Grand Teton. I'm no good at posting pics so here's the link to the photos on my site:

Can't wait for the rest of the days, Derek. Get 'er done!
I have about 9 days of images to process between Yellowstone and the Tetons. So it will most likely take me a while. But I have added a few more from the next day.
I actually had a close call with two Bison at Trout Lake when the trout agitated them. Then a moose saw me taking his picture and started walking very fast towrd me.
Hey Derek, Welcome home! Bet you would rather be up there though right? Nice shots too! Lets see some more. How many cards did you fill Lets go back in the fall.
John
You have a great collection so far of what looks to be a very rewarding trip on many levels! Can't wait till you have all of your images ready for viewing!
No close calls with critters on my trip this time though one of the bears I photographed in Grand Teton is the one that chewed up a hiker 10 days ago. Gotta watch it around them big critters
I had a chance to check out your images from May. Those are great shots! I especially like the ones of the bears. I needed a longer lens for the some of those types of shots. But others were right along side or 'on' the road.
As we were entering the Tetons I asked the ranger about bear activity. She said 'A jogger was just attacked yesterday near Jenny Lake. He did good at playing dead though.'
I don't think that was what my wife or I had planned on hearing. I guess you could say I was a little cautious while out on location in the early AM & PM. Once after sunset I shooting on top of signal mountain 'alone' and swore I heard a growl nearby. Maybe it was my imagination getting the best of me. Either way I got the heck out of there!
Thanks for the kind words, Derek. I had a great time in Yellowstone and Grand Teton. I shoot an older Canon 10D and all the wildlife images were shot with a 100-400 at various focal lengths. The wide shot of the sow with 3 cubs was zoomed all the way in to 100mm while the individual shot of the sow was at 400mm. I'll have a trip journal posted when my web guy gets back from vacation in a week or so. If you e-mail me I can provide a link to my yahoo blog where I posted daily journal reports during the trip.

Needless to say I backed way off in both cases.

Did you use a longish lens for shots like this one, or were you relatively close?
