I hope that you'll please allow a vagabond from the MWNP region to visit your region in the near future. ;) I'm a photographer from near Madison, WI who will be traveling to western Nebraska in about week to do some shooting. I lived near Lake McConaughy about thirty years ago, as a college student, and want to return to the area for some shooting for myself. I hope to shoot numerous panoramics, as well as more "normal" perspective shots.
On my intinerary, I'm hoping to stop and consider the following areas:
> Ash Hollow State Park (for the ruts)
> Jail & Courthouse Rock
> Chimney Rock NHS
> Scotts Bluff NM & Mitchell Pass
Can anyone recommend to me shooting locations/times of day, etc., for these locations? Are there other landmark possibilities that you think that I should consider? I also have some other places from my memory to visit while there, but want to get your feedback.
After I shoot along this route for a few days, I'm hoping to head north to see family in Rapid City and shoot in the Black Hills and then the Badlands. If there are specific locations along the way from Scottsbluff to Rapid City that I should consider, I'd also enjoy hearing about those! (I seem to remember beautiful vistas on that route when I drove it way back when...)
Thanks! Feel free to post or to write to me directly,
Tim!

Hi Tim! Stop by anytime, you're always welcome here at CSNP!
I can't help you with your request but there is a guy who might be able to over on TNP. His name is Dave Uhlig and at one time he was one of the moderators (don't know if he still is). He might be able to offer some good photo ops so I would try to contact him.
That's the best I can offer. Good luck and if you don't mind, stop by and post a picture or two after your trip, we'd love to see them!
I would shoot any of these areas early or late. Because much of the surrounding area is relatively flat you will have good light on the taller features (chimney, jailhouse, etc..) until after sunset or before sunrise. Night shots are also good. Becuase there are fewer large cities out there you can get good star pics. Also, they have had more rain out there this year, so things might be a little more green than they normally would this time of year.
If you have an extra day or two I would go out to Toadstool Geologic Park in extreme north east Nebraska. It is kind of like the Badlands of Nebraska with lots of eroded sandstone in intersting formations. You could also head north into the sandhills. The beauty there is more subtle but it is nice.
I actually just got back from a 7-day photo trip through Nebraska, which is my home state. I lived there until two years ago. Now I live in Chicago, but I try to get back whenever I can. I will try to post a few photos from my recent trip soon.
I hope you enjoy your trip. Nebraska has a lot of unexpected, and underappreciated beauty.
