Anyone here using Vista yet? I have to buy a new computer and am hesitant to plunge into Vista since all my software and digital photography stuff was purchased to run on XP. Concerned about compatability issues. I'm particularly interested to hear feedback from those of you using Vista for a digital darkroom and if you've run into any issues?
Thanks Rick! I'm leaning towards sticking with XP pro. Dell still offers it. i don't need all the bells and whistles of Vista and XP has had most bugs fixed over the years.
I built a PC recently for photo PP only. I am running Vista 64. I haven't had any major driver issues other than GretagMacbeth hasn't updated their driver so it is not signed to run under Vista. When I calibrate my monitor I have to boot the PC and hit the F8 key to turn off Vista driver checking. A minor annoyance...
Though Bridge in CS3 could run better under Vista.

Most of the software vendors are catching up and have mad ethe necessary modifications to run on Vista by now. go to thier web sites and check the support areas. you should be able to determine whether they have patches, updates, etc to make their products compatible with Vista.
Thanks for bringing this post up. I'm in the same boat, I need a new computer but would rather have a screamin' machine running XP Pro instead of having 1 GB of RAM eaten up by a newer OS. I didn't see the XP option on the Dell website, but how easy is it to downgrade a Vista machine to XP Pro?
I got alot of questionable answers from the CircuitCity and CompUSA sales people. They said CS2 and MSOffice 2000 wouldn't work at all in Vista and that you couldn't erase Vista and put XP Pro in its place. I don't know what the answer is, sites on the internet seem to confirm that they will work, but I know I'm not buying everything over again (printer, scanner, software, etc). If I do, it'll be a Mac and MS can shove it...And to think, these guys on the floor could've really sold me a $1000 computer that day if they weren't so hell bent on Vista upgrades.
Anyone else have experience with this? I'm looking at an HP m8010y or a Dell 520 2GB (will add another 2 GB later) 250-320 GB HD (will add a 500 GB later) and I already have the soundcard, etc to frankenstein myself. Anyone out there have a Vista system with 2 GB RAM and happy with CS2 performance???
Kevin, take a look at Rick's feedback on Vista. Sounds like PS is working fine. There are also some other reviews online and the windows site has some info.
I ordered a Dell yesterday with XP Pro. I'll let you guys figure out all the bugs on Vista while I work away. :-) May upgrade to Vista down the road but for now XP is just fine for me. You can locate the Dell XP systems by clicking on the XP link on the right/middle of the Desktop page. There are several systems you can customize.
It would be great if someone could take a close look at whether Vista retains your monitor profile color. According to Steve Upton, whenever an "Administrator-level" dialog come up in Vista, the graphics card look-up tables are changed - messing up the monitor calibration.
I heard that too. Though I have calibration testing software (freeware from GretagMacbeth)that reads the current LUT loaded in the graphic cards and they seem to stay as they were set.
I took a look at the XP Pro machines from Dell, but other than the XPS system, the others don't have a dual core Intel chip available (which, BTW, does not fit into my CPU hole in the desk I bought last year). I'm just not ready to junk my old peripherals and software that work just fine as it is. And I don't know, will a PowerMac run a printer and scanner with a USB port or would I have to junk them too???
So now I'm currently looking at a used computer and building up. Not anything too old, about a year old or so that is solidly built with XP...Vista's too new to play with and I still remember the problems I had with the Win3.xx to Win95 and the Win2000 to WinXP upgrade paths. MS does not excel in writing good code - I ain't fallin' for it again...
