I'm planning a trip to Glacier over the July 4th weekend and would
appreciate recommendations for shooting locations for wildlife, landscapes and wildflowers.

Other locations in Western Montana would be welcome also.

Thanks.

I was always partial to Avalanche Lake and anywhere along the Highline Trail. The National Bison Range was nice. Lovely views of the Mission Valley and Mission Mtns.

Hi Ollie,

It's been YEARS since I was in Glacier, so please corroborate this with rangers and local info, but there are some spectacular places in the backcountry. I went to Cobalt Lake in the central park (I believe part of the Nyack parcel, or at least that's what they called it in the early 90s), and also to Hole-in-the-wall, which is a spectacular waterfall coming out of a cliff below a carved glacial cirque.

There are also some great views at St. Mary's Lake as well...Beautiful place. Pretty much just throw a rock in any direction and you'll find great stuff there.

Good luck,
-D

and I was just logging into the forum to post a question about Glacier since I will be spending some time there this weekend. Thanks for the tips posted so far, and I will be sure to post when I get back after this weekend.

Cheers.

FYI, The Glacier NP website http://home.nps.gov/applications/glac/roadstatus/roadstatus.cfm as of today lists the Logan Pass area of the Going To The Sun Road as closed. Road repairs.

The hike below the Garden Wall on the Highline Trail is one of my all-time favorites. Start at Logan Pass and hike down to the Granite Park Chalet, then out to the big curve in the road. This requires a vehicle shuttle but it is easy to hitch a ride. The wildlife, wildflowers and views are out of this world.

Here's a second reminder:read the link Laurie provided. Last year a series of serious thunderstorms rolled through Glacier just before the entire park got snowed in. There was massive flooding, and the Going-to-the-Sun Road was washed away in several locations. Take a really thorough check of the Glacier website http://www.nps.gov/glac, including News and Road Status before planning a trip at any time this year; the one washout is going to take all year to repair (temporary bridge will be placed before the end of the year to open the road...).

Many thanks for all the responses. I'm resigned to driving around on Route 2 to get to the east side. I'm in Missoula for the summer and may be my only chance to spend some time in Glacier.

Thanks again.

Just got back from Glacier. They were hoping to have the road open again on July 1, but I would recommend checking the website for updates. Some of the trails on the south side of Many Glacier were closed due to bear activity however most other trails were open. There were people in the parking lot who spotted a few grizzly bears on the side of one of the mountains.

If the pass is closed, depending on the work they are doing you may hike up the road. However on the east side you can get only to the Weeping Wall.
