Another (very late) Skunk Cabbage - for Jack!
Hey all, when Jack posted his very cool closeup of a skunk cabbage leaf in the spring, I promised/threatened to post my own image along similar lines. I took the image on a spring trip (before I saw Jack's, by the way), but I'm always very slow about getting images developed, scanned, posted, etc. SO, tell me what you think - the petals had dropped from a serviceberry tree blooming above this small area of skunk cabbage. I almost sunk to mid-calf in mud to get this one!

Looking at the plants look like I am looking at a google map far above the amazon or something. I'ts amazing to me what a common plant looks like when well photographed as this is. It should be a reminder to all of us to not over look the obvious.

I really love the color in this image. The petals add some definition as well. Nice!!!

PS IS there skunk cabbage in Oregon? Hmmmmm....

Christopher, I really love the water droplets and petals on the leaf. Those simple touches make for a very special image. The petals do look a bit hot right now, but I'm guessing it has as much to do with the scanning and adjustment as anything (if it's flatbed scanned, I feel your pain ). Even if they are slightly blown on your original transparency, I would wager that they wouldn't be nearly as much of a problem in print as they come across on a monitor. Great catch!

4x5 or MF?

Yeah Jack, I agree. I think they are a lot of fun to explore once you get in that mindset. I went out specifically on this shoot looking for details, etc, so I was in that mode.....

Joel, I think the tranny is a bit hot too, but oddly there really wasn't much detail in the petals anyway. I think partly that's because they were wet, so they just looked white. The scan isn't doing me any favors (flatbed *&%^&* scan!). This was MF - I didn't fancy trying to get the 4x5 in on this one! Still, the macro lens on the Pentax 645 system is fabulous - I could get a pretty large print out of this one with some care and a good drum scan......

I really like the water drops and the veins, CJ. Wonderful capture, but I'm currently undecided on the petals.
