This is a scene from upper Henline Creek, taken yesterday. I went up for a repeat with Greg Lief after a large group joined me earlier this month -- by the time we got to this spot on the earlier trip, the rain was coming down in earnest, so I really wanted to go back and get some images. This time, we were battling sun, of all things! A sharp contrast from when I melted a camera and lens in a thunderstorm here in 2006..!
This was taken downstream from the uppermost pair of (unmapped) waterfalls, right in front of a pair of mines located on opposing sides of the creek. There's a miners trail leading right to this spot, if you simply branch off the Ogle Mountain Trail where a sign points uphill (and the miners trail heads downhill). Simply a spectacular stretch of creek, especially in June.
Downstream shots are always a mixed bag for me - so any comments and suggestions on composition or otherwise would be much appreciated!
Definitely a nice scene, but to me it lacks a real solid focal point. Its almost half "blah" and half too busy - too much to look at yet nothing to look at. I think better emphasis on the turbulent water would have solved this nicely.
Hi tom, there isn't anything central at the bottom of the shot, so my eye can't find and anchor or anything to lead me in. I do like the motion vector of the water flowing in from the side, but it doesn't point the eye anywhere. It's a great scene and you captured it well, however, from a photographic point of view the comp doesn't work for me.
Thud. Thanks, Andy and Bryan -- I'll file this one under the infatuation that flows from fresh memories of the trip..! I think you're right about the water not being a central enough subject in the photo. I'm thinking that I might have tried pulling back on the polarizer to allow the sheen to show a bit on the clear surfaces.
