Howdy Folks! Well, with an eight week old son, it's been just a tiny bit tougher to get out much lately and shoot!!  But hanging with my son and taking pics of him has more than made up for it!

However, last weekend, my wife and I made our first extended trip out with little Sawyer (extended meaning longer than a trip to Babies-R-Us!). Her family has a little place down in South Fork, not too far from Wolf Creek Pass. It was an awesome, relaxing weekend, just hanging out. Our biggest excitement was to drive the half hour into the old mining town of Creede and just walk around, check out all the cool little stores and galleries.

Well, my sister was kind enough to lend us her digital Rebel DSLR a couple months ago, mainly for baby pics, since my point and shoot digital has such a crappy delay to it. That just doesn't work that great with an infant! It has a 28-70, and a 70-300 with it,and I had a blast just messing around with it all weekend, especially the 70-300. These poppies (I think, someone correct me if I'm wrong) were planted right in front of one of the little shops, and back lit perfectly. I zoomed into 300mm, and bracketed a little to see what I'd get. Wish I would have had a tripod, as I'm sure this is just a little soft from movement.

After shooting nothing but 4x5 stuff for years, it really was kinda fun to try something different for a change. Of course, now the problem is that I really want my own DSLR!!! DOH!!! Someday I guess! Thanks for looking!

Nice light and color, Brent! Interesting background too, is it a rock wall or dirt? I think I'd lose the stem leaving the frame on the left. I love poppies. I'd love to run in to some in the wild around here.

I didn't realize all you shot was 4x5. I find myself vasilating between the two. I haven't shot 4x5 since February. It's easy to get spoiled with the instant feedback and ease of workflow at home with digital. But holding that big, crisp transparency still can't be beat. I just wish scanning wasn't such a pain.

Have fun with the Rebel!

Brent,

Great to hear from you. I was also near South Fork this weekend. I was finally checking out Crater Lake in the South San Juans. My wife thought it was very romantic when I told her how you had proposed to your wife there. Beautiful place!

thats' a beautiful comp, Brent. I love the way it seems the poppies (or whatever) are floating in air. Great job!

Cool Shot Brent! Good to hear from you.
Lets see... your son is eight weeks old so that means in a few more weeks he will be ready for his first trip the San Juans.LOL... :jump:

We actually just got back from a 10 day trip to Yellowstone and GTNP with our three young'ns (Grace -1, Kayla -3, Luke -5). They all love the outdoors and hiking, especially the baby because she gets a free ride on dad's back. Just get yourself a decent Kelty or other backpack carrier with a sun shade and you are good to go.

Digital is definitely addictive and much more practical for moving kids, animals, etc... That little rebel is a pretty good buy right also. Although most of your $ will go to Babies-R-Us for a little while.

Oh, there's no point in fighting the call of the dSLR. Try to just be satisfied with a Rebel. Because the 5D is beautiful camera overpriced by about $1000. I would guess the next 5D will be closer to the $1599-1799 price range. In the meantime, one can take great pictures (like the one here) with the rebel.

Hi Brent,

As you're finding out once a child arrives Life as you knew it ceases to exist for oh, say, 25 years. Regarding the DSLR experience, I made the switch about 3 years ago and my old guy knees and back are still thanking me for not having to schlep all the 4X5 gear around on my back. Downside is I still haven't been able to hit the Lottery and have enough money to get all my LF transparancies scanned at once. A small portion every year is about the best I can afford. Another 10 years or so, I should have them all done.

One more thought: The best is yet to come. I'll never forget the look on my son's face the first time he or I had seen the Grand Canyon and I handed him my spare 35mm body with a lens and 4 rolls of film with instructions to "have fun and don't drop it."
Good luck and good shooting.

Bill

Brent, very nice flora pic. I hear you about not being able to go out, but I don't have a child to blame. I have a bunch of clients that act like infants at times. Does that count?
