Just over a week ago I busted the LCD in my D40 and looked into getting it fixed. I tried a referral from Nikon to a Sacramento shop that estimated $250 (plus shipping back and forth). I ended up checking out my local repair guy near where I work in Oakland and got my D40 back in one week for $125. I'd previously had him refurbish an F3 after he was recommended to me by a Bronica shooter, and I have to say I'm very pleased with his work in digital as well. The guy's name is Allen, and the shop is Apollo Camera Service, 1411 Webster St., just two blocks from the 12th Street BART stop (510-763-3380). A funky little shop, but he does good work.
Thanks for posting this information, John. It is always good to hear first hand accounts of how a repair shop handles a certain situation, as you have now had two repairs there that went well too.
