I went back to Crater Lake on the first day after the North entrance opened. I was down there scouting out locations for a particular composition I have in mind, but the only thing open was the Rim Drive between the North entrance and the Lodge. Anyway, I wanted to catch the sunrise both mornings I was there. Here is a shot from the first morning. There is a little too much sky on top, IMO, but it was to squeeze in the crescent moon (barely visible at 17mm).
This is also a touch more saturated than it appears in Photoshop--I have this problem now with CS3. I'll have to dig into it, but just imagine this slightly less saturated in the blues...

And here was the second morning. The moon was lower in the horizon and better centered over Wizard Island. Also, I had a better cloud formation over the lake. Just as I was getting set up, a fog blew up out of the valley behind me (This is across from the Lightning Springs trail). In two minutes, my beatiful view was replaced with this! You win some, you lose some...
Those are both awesome. I love them. I just visited Crater Lake....in the middle of the day...and I didn't come away with anything even close to this. My schedule wouldn't allow me to stay for sunset or sunrise....and sometimes I feel a bit lost in the mid day sun. Back to the drawing board.
Again....really great shots. Some of the best I've seen.
On the first one, I feel the snow in foreground may be too messy. I really like the moodyness of the second one. Now thats cool!

Hey, that's kind of funny. I threw up the second one just to illustrate my story of "the one that got away"... I still don't think it works as a standalone print, but that's cool that you guys enjoy it.
I appreciate the comments on the first. The lake and the rim itself is kind of messy with the dirty snow and partial ground cover, but there are a few good shots to be had here and there.
Mike,
I'll have to give you props on your comp. It's not really that easy to find them up there, in my opinion. Not being a fan of Crater Lake for some reason I can't really explain...this is nice!
