SIlver Creek Falls
Hello all! This is my very first post. I was directed to this site by Mr. Ryan DesJardins about a month ago...and I've been checking it daily ever since.

I'm fairly new to photography - started taking photographs about two years ago and bought my first SLR, a Nikon D80, about nine months ago. That being said, I have a fairly limited "portfolio" and have limited shooting and post-processing experience/skills.

But, like you guys, I just can't get enough of photography. It's an amazingly fun hobby.

Welcome Ben! Nice first post. A little dark, but I think it works here. It gives the image a bit of mood. I also lik the light play on moss on the tops of the tree branches.

Nice first post Ben. I like the way you have kept all of the lines vertical.

Welcome Ben,
Very nice first post. I have almost the exact comp but it was taken in the fall when the leaves were blocking the view of the falls. This is a sweet shot!

Hi, Ben!
This looks a little dark to me. But I still like it, especially the blue color of the water and the mossy trees. Cool first post. Keep 'em coming.

This isn't the first time I've run into the "darkness" issue. I think my 19" Samsung Syncmaster runs a little on the bright side. I've used online sites to calibrate my monitor - but that doesn't seem to have worked well. You guys have any suggestions on how to get my monitor calibrated?

Nice shot (a little curves on the image (mask out the water) would help this sing a lovely song and welcome to the forums. Make sure you visit Earth, Sea and Sky and other forums as well. Lots of very helpful people here.....

Welcome, Ben. I've had similar monitor frustrations, so my suggestion is suffer through the calibration steps, but with a couple favorite images on screen, behind your settings window (works on a Mac, not sure about a PC). This sort of provides "ground truthing" to see if the calibrations are really doing something good or bad to an actual image.

Nice first post! I'm a newbie here, too, and one of the best tips I learned was Marc's sharpening system, described on this page:

Glad I'm now the second newbie from the bottom...

Welcome to the forum Ben , a nice pic there. I like the green waters and the light on top of the mossy branches. It's a little dark which can be corrected by curves/levels. There is a twig at the lower left hand corner - which would be my only nit. Overall a nice first post.

I adjusted my monitor some. Please let me know if this appears to be any better or not enough of a change at all. Going between the images, they look quite different on my monitor. But you guys can be the judge. Thanks for all of your help.

Ben, welcome to the forum. You've shared a very nice first post.

ya know, I think you had it the first time. The darkness works in this photo.

I use a spyder2 to calibrate. And yes, Smsung Syncmasters do run really bright. I have mine turned down to around 50% or less.
