I just got back from a trip to the Olympics, I had to cut the trip short because of the storm that came in this night. No sweet light on this trip unfortunately, but some interesting stormy skies. Anyway, I'm curious which of these you prefer?

b+w, but I would like to see it a bit more contrasty. I think it would make more of an impact if the whites were a little whiter. Great shot with what you had to work with. Sometimes in weather like this, I get discouraged and just put my camera away.

All of the ocean photography around here has inspired me to head west a bit more often, and start doing more of this. I'm a little nervous about exposing my gear to sand and salt water, Zack -- I'd be interested in hearing any tips you have for protecting your equipment when you're on the beach. I have never taken my DSLR on the beach out of concern for nuking it (...which I've managed to do with rainwater, anyway...)

I understand your concern Tom, the ocean is one of the more punishing environments for photo gear, especially if the wind is whipping the ocean spray all over your camera. That being said, I really don't worry too much about my gear, I protect it when I can, but when I'm in the heat of capturing a scene I throw caution to the wind usually. I do try to have a filter in front of the lens when it's really bad though so my repeated cleanings wont scratch my lens. The only other thing I do to protect my gear is just to leave it in the camera bag till the conditions are good enough. I bet Marc has some tips though, he shoots at the coast way more than I do.
I'll chime in here too with the BW as my fav as well, but still feel this could be more. If you dont mind, I've posted what I had in mind.
Now, this may or may not be out of your comfort zone for manipulation...however...one can convert an image to BW in camera...we choose to convert in PS. One can also add a photo filter on front of the lens, or do it in PS as well. Doesn't mean it has to be put in photo art forum...not one little bit.
What do you think?

Nice Rick, I like toning actually. Toning can really enhance and change the mood of an image as in this case, but I still like the high contrast B&W the best myself.
Well, okay fellas... There has to be one sour apple in the crate, and I guess it's me this time.
Of the two B&W, I like #1. The color version really speaks "WA Coast" to me. No rotten egg throwing, now, it's just the way I see it!
What I love the most about this image is all that world of water radiating out to me from the haystack. I feel like I'm standing there and about to get it! Great shot.
Zack,
I really can't decide now, but I may be leaning towards your BW version...with maybe a hair more shadow detail in that awesome point. The comp and shutter speed is spot on, fo sho!

I like the contrasty one better

Personally, I like the color version better. But since the color is not the most striking feature of this photo, the B&W version will keep viewers focused on it's strong points (form, motion, and texture.) Of the two B&W images, I like the higher contrast version better.

This was a 1 second exposure Tom. I experimented with a lot of different shutter speeds, and 1 sec was my favorite for this scene.
Here is a higher contrast version, let me know what you think?
