I've never had a problem with mine...I had great customer service from Nikon once before on a problem with a D70. I'd contact them, hopefully it will be an easy fix.

Obvious things to check are the battery power level and the mechanical/electrical interface on the back of the lens. If it happens with more than one lens then it is a body problem. And review the set options to rule out that you've somehow engaged some strange mode.
Also, ask this in the D200 forum at www.nikonians.org and you'll get a lot of advice and might find someone else who had a similar problem.
You will lose custom settings, but there is a 'two button' reset on the D200. If you have the same problem with more than one lens, I'd perform a reset.
Mine started doing that while in Yosemite! I was using the 70-300VR in high speed continuous mode and was really shooting a lot ... Birds interacting. My feeling is the shutter is heating up and needed to cool off? This has occurred many times with this lens and only while blasting off in high speed mode.

Which lens are you using and on what settings?
I have yet to contact Nikon.
