Did some 4 wheeling on Saturday. I ran the Holy Cross trail and thought I'd share some pics of the fun. Holy Cross is rated an 8. All the jeeps in these pics are running 33" - 37" tires. This was the first time I've driven this trail, but from what I heard, it is more difficult than usual this year because the boulder in the creek moved and a large boulder fell onto the easy line leaving the creek.

And I forgot to mention, but the skies were amazing over the ten mile range this weekend. I hope somebody was in a good spot for the light show.

Those are some cool pics, Mel. I hope it's not that hard to make it to the Notch Mtn. trailhead.

The notch mountain trail head shouldn't be this difficult. This is one of the most difficult 4wd roads in Colorado. Its quite a way south from Notch Mountain, though you could climb it from the top of this trail. Its 3.8 miles and only leads to Holy Cross city, Hunky Dory Lake and Cleveland Lake. The very last .25 miles has gotten to the point that there is a high rollover risk for a jeep and mostly just buggies do it now.

I plan on the Ouray area this trip, and possibly staying up at Clear Lake, then taking time to explore the surrounding areas up there. Since I posted that link a couple weeks ago, I have gotten all kinds of info pertaining to 4x4 trails, man, alot of choices, and good photo ops lie ahead. :)

Really looks like you guys had some fun!

That is one gnarly road! I hiked it many years ago, and remembered seeing a "This 4WD road maintained by..." sign. I was shocked people actually drove on the thing!

Tony: Notch Mtn. TH is a piece of cake. You could probably drive any street-capable car up there. It's just potholes and washboards, nothing 4WD about it.

That's crazy - wow! Not sure I could hike that much less drive it!

It'd be fine to hike, but there can be alot of traffic. There were probably 50 jeeps/buggies up there on Saturday. To the south there are some nicer hiking trails leading to Missouri lakes, Fancy Pass and to the lakes at the top of this trail. It is quite nice in the area when you get away from the huge crowds on Homestake road.

I bet your parents thought twice before they let you borrow a car!

Looks like fun, Mel. Definately a road that you tackle with friends and preferably not in the vehicle that needs to get you home.

I'll be up there this weekend to spend a couple of nights in the Missouri lakes area. I'm going to take the large format on it's first backpacking trips. Hope the great skies repeat themselves!

Nice action shot, Mel. I guess you need at least 33's for this trail as you have about 2 inches to spare on your tranny. I spent my weekend riding singletrack near Taylor Park/ Cottonwood Pass...some of the nastiest trails I've ever traveled.

One of the guys from the trip posted a good shot of me on the "easy" line coming out of French creek.
