From Bill Dark in an earlier post: "Most of you probably already know about this, but thought I would post a note regarding the Ansel Adams Exhibit in St Louis through July 16th. The show "features family photos that are more than a cut above". I can't wait to see this...here's a link for more information." The link: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19263272/

I attended the Ansel Adams exhibit today in St. Louis. It is only a 2-hour drive for me. It was great seeing his b&w prints knowing that they came out of his own lab. I had attended his exhibit a couple of years ago in Springfield, MO, and found that this showing had quite a few different pieces so as to not duplicate the two events.

I came across several favorites, several new favorites and an interesting series titled "Surf Sequence" with five prints of the same sea shore setting but with a different wave action in each frame. I thought of the common saying that there are no two snowflakes alike and felt that you could also say that about waves at any given spot.

I thought the rooms were a little dark for the best viewing of the prints and the reflection from the glass was a bit distracting. Overall though, I thought the trip was well worth it.

If any of you take the trip to see the exhibit, be sure to stop off at Shaw Nature Reserve. It is an outlier of the Missouri Botanical Garden and is located just off of I-44 at Gray Summit. It is an outstanding place for wildflower photography. They have display habitats of glades, prairies, marshes, pine woodland, and forests, all just loaded with ferns and wildflowers and many labeled. There are also 3,000 acres woven with trails that lead to more examples of the habitats mentioned above but all are natural. Trips to the nature reserve enabled me to capture several wildflowers that I needed for my wildflower books. There is a $3.00 fee per adult at the visitor center. The back drive loop drive is open Monday to Thursday and that takes you to the natural stuff. The display habitats are closer to the main part of the reserve and are open 7 days a week. By the way, royal catchfly is in full bloom!

If Helen is at the reception desk, mention my name and I am sure she'll roll out the red carpet or, maybe kick you out!

Best,
Don

Don - sounds like the Nature Reserve is definitely a must see. The weather was not very conducive to good photography when I was up there, but I think I'll have to return. And thanks for the royal catchfly alert!

I attended the show in Springfield, Mo. also, I enjoyed viewing the exhibit very much. I can certainly recommend going to the St. Louis exhibit if you get the chance.

David, I also attended the Springfield exhibit but the St. Louis exhibit is not the same showing. Ansel's son, Michael, a graduate of Washington U. School of Medicine (1967) and his wife, Jeanne, have put together a new exhibit based on their family's own collection of Ansel's work. As a graduate of Wash. U., he wanted to do something special in appreciation for his time spent there. True I have seen a few of the iconic ones before but there are many that I had not see. I don't think those that attended the Springfield exhibit would be disappointed in the St. Louis exhibit. You also get a free, 4 page, 8 1/2 x 11 inch exhibit guide book.

Best,
Don
