Colourful slug
This is a nudibranch (Chromodoris willani) from the Philippines, just one of many of the wonderful, bright sea slugs that can be found on coral reefs. Their bright colours warn predators that they are toxic and taste nasty.

Powershot A620, f6.3, 1/60s, flash.

hi matt,

i'm a big nudibranch fan, so i like this image just for that. i was reading an article on wetpixel the other day that was all about british nudibranchs which was news to me that there are any, and some of them are quite colourful.

i like the composition of this and, the nudi is placed nicely in the frame, the flash issue is better on this image probably because you are face onto something, and not shooting on something that is planing away form you.

my only cirticism is the bg (ok i know its not strictly bg, more backdrop, but try to find nudis on something a little more picturesque, and your nudi photos will start to look very impressive.

nice try.

There are nudi's in UK waters, Kenneck Sands is a good spot... as is Lulworth cove.

Its nice to see some underwater stuff... how deep was this?

I understand your point about the background but i rather like the way its dull colours highlight the vivid blue of the slug  I can't recall the depth - probably around 10m.

We have some wonderful nudis over here - I need to go find them again!

I'll try and post a very colorful background one after work.

Hello Matt
I like the contrast between slug and BG, as you say, it emphasises it's superb colours.
Best wishes

I too love nudi's. I've only seen them before in salt water aquariums.

Looking at your shot, it just occurred to me (picture a light bulb going off) they must have come from somewhere....duh!!!!

Thanks for the great shot.
