P lenses are manual focus but have an electronic chip in them that sends information to the camera so they are compatible with all AF bodies.

The 500/4P is very light for its focal length and extremely sharp, but it is not auto-focus.

It's about the best value for a long pro lens if you can live without AF. Still, they go a bit high on eBay, this time of year especially. Nikon also made a 400mm f3.5 that is an even better value. No AF and will not meter with cameras cheaper than the D200. (It's an AIS lens.)

thanks!! Just what i needed to know! I have a 500 mm AF i love, but was asking for a friend - he also needs an AF. There is a P lens on Ebay now, closing in the am, at about $1800 now.

The only price of something on eBay that matters is the one 20 seconds before closing. They can double in the last minute. Check the completed auctions for a true sense of what something sells for. I just bought a Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR on eBay for $1,300. I usually try to avoid buying on there this time of year though.

It's a wonderful lens especially coupled with a good 1.4X TC.(TC14B or TC14Ewith tab removed). The Wimberley Sidekick holds it nicely. The focus confirmation arrows in the camera viewfinder help a lot with the lack of AF.
