Wow - my first day off in months! Been doing a bit of lurking, but no time to post or respond to any of the fantastic posts I've been seeing. Chomping at the bit to get out and shoot.
I want to take a short hike in a nice area for shooting. Any one ever taken the trail out of the White River Campground that goes to Glacier Basin just below the SunRise area? Looks like only 2 or 3 miles on the map, but crosses a few creeks. Any experiences that would recommend that one?
Yes, I have hiked that trail before. The nicest spot is right around Glacier Basin itself, where there is one particularly scenic little pond with a partial reflection of the peak. The trail is typical overgrown sub-moraine foliage, which is pretty short and scrubby for the most part. There are, however, some nice forest stands near the White River campground end, as well as near the basin. I didn't find the creeks to be terribly photogenic though. There are a few flowers around in places towards the end of the month. The trail is very popular with mountaineers heading for the Emmons glacier route.
I went online and checked out the Mt Rainier trail updates for snow levels and conditions. What I found is that parts of the trail are washed out from Nov's storms, and the terrain is tough going. For that short distance, I would have considered it anyway if I had been out doing more hiking - I'm waaay too soft and haven't been out enough to get back into condition. Also, reported mama bear in the area with 2 cubs. Not crazy about dealing with that. I do think I'll put that trail on my list for a bit later tho. I have been wanting to hike the area just a bit higher - Borroughs (sp) trail out of Sunrise. The area just above the tree line is fabulous right after the snow clears. Not a difficult trail and stunning views with mt goats in early mornings.
