Orton'esque?

Ned had posted an image of a covered bridge that he had done some post-processing on using the Orton technique. That's a technique I had used on some of my own images in the past and I like what it can do for some images.

As an experiment, I tried to achieve the Orton look and feel totally in camera. This image is my first attempt at doing so and has no post-processing other than some local contrast enhancement and a bit of a crop to get rid of some extraneous background clutter.

I was using my 300/4L with 1.4x TC on my 20D, all setup on a tripod. By shooting at f/45 and ISO100 to get as slow of a shutter speed as a I could get at this time of day, I then started the exposure OOF and ratcheted the focus towards in focus and then past as I completed the exposure. I think it is somewhat Orton'esque - not perfect, but I'll probably try again. What do others think?

This is a nice comp. But the effect makes my head hurt. (Sorry. I know this isn't what one would hope to hear when trying something new.) I hope you keep practicing!

This looks more out of focus than soft focus to me.

because the orton effect actually has one image that is nice and sharp and one that is blurred and then blended together you still get that clarity in the final image...

This image just looks blurry to me with blown highlights....

it's good to think outside the camera.....but I am not sure this can work "in camera" unless you fog up the lens first
