I would like to hear some user feedback on the Acratech V2 ballhead. Looks pretty slick and the reviews I read have been good, but curious if anyone has hands on experience with it.
I don't know of anyone using it, but I do remember reading a review that was critical of one aspect of it, although I don't remember what that aspect was now. I know, real big help, huh? Pull up several reviews and check it out just to be on the safe side. As I recall the issue wasn't a huge one, just an inconvenience in certain circumstances. Sorry I can't be of more help.
I believe the inconvenience was not having a QR lever. He did not like the screw QR release, but it was minor. For my Arca 4x5, I cannot use a flip lever. Despite the releases being "Arca compatible", the damn things won't work on an Arca rail. Go figure.
Just found an article reviewing all kinds of ballheads at MAGNAchrom, an online magazine for LF and MF. They gave the Acratech V2 the Editors Choice award. Favorite of the lot. Good info for my little research project. Good magazine btw. Just found it today. I will read the whole magazine later. It is free to register, which allows you to download it.
Hello Harley,
I just purchased the V2 about a month ago. I was using the Kirk BH-3 for about 3 years. During that period I had problems with the ballhead getting difficult to move. I got it freed up several times until it finally locked up and I could not use it. Based on research, I concluded the BH-3 has a history of locking up because of it's complex design. I purchased the Acratech V2 and have been using it for about a month. You can take this for what's its worth but in my opinion the V2 is a superior ballhead compared to the BH-3. From what I can see, it's simple design should prevent lock ups. The largest lens I use is a Nikon 300mm f/4d with Extenders and Extension tubes.
Got the V2 yesterday. So far, just put it on the tripod and set up the digital camera, trying it at various angles, etc. Based on that extremely limited use, I am quite pleased with it so far. The ballhead holds tight and is quite easy to use. The friction control works well. Compared to the Acratech Ultimate, I would consider the V2 design a huge improvement due to the elimination of the "spin around" necessary to move the ballhead into various positions with the angled construction of the Ultimate. If you have used one, you know what I mean.
I can just say that I really like the V2 ballhead. I'm using it with my 5D and lenses 17-40 and 70-200 mainly and it works great. I think it's a really good choice for anyone who is concerned about weight. Good luck with your Ultimate Ballhead, Harley.
