So yesterday I was all gung-ho about hiking up TDH and doing the mirrow lake thing today. The after reading Curtis' post about not to include too much clear sky, I got to thinking. He is right, why would I want to hike all the way up there for cloudless sunrise....so I opted to hit the courts and get a few games of racquetball in. When I woke up this morning at 4:40am the sky was the most amazing pink and orange with the crescent moon hanging in the east with whispy clouds....
I swear I busted my knee trying to kick myself in the A$$ for not going.........
Marc is up around the sisters area so I am pretty sure he will come back with some amazing shots from this morning!!!!
Dangit anyway......
on a higher note...I did win my games this morning!
Darren,
I played raquetball last night and got my butt kicked!
I must add...get out there and shoot. Never totally trust the weather report. I've gotten my best clouds when the forecast said completely clear skies. If ya dont get out there and take the chances, you'll not be as likely to get the spectacular shots.
Also, an awesome sunrise/sunset on Hood doesn't mean awesome conditions in the rest of the cascades. Each mountain can have totally different conditions, even the ones 2 miles from eachother.

I'm not sure about Marc's luck with the sunrise. It always seems to be better North of here (Hood area). Not much materialized over the Sisters this morning because of the low-lying clouds to the East. The sunrise in that direction was magnificent though. I've made the same observation as Rick...including yesterday's pano.
Darren, I know, I was woken up about 5 am this morning and I was confused as my room was pink. I cleared my eyes and opened my blinds to see the most incredible sky show. Man was I bummed I wasn't taking shots from some amazing vantage point! The sky was AMAZING! I'm in SE Portland by the way, on 30th and Hawthorne
Oh man, now I feel guilty! Actually though, let me give you something to think about. I got one of my all-time best images at sunrise on a completely cloudless day. We wer camping at Paulina Lake a few months before I switched to digital.
I was shooting across the lake at the western sky and I got silhoetted hills with the earth shadow under the belt of venus and it's reflected in the wavey (but not choppy) water. I'll try to dig up the image tonight when I get home and post it in this thread.
When I saw the clouds moving up from the south, I just felt the sunrise was going to be awesome. Too bad I had to work also.

that's just wrong......I don't even know how I will manage going back to work in Sept......this time off has been so great......Monday I hope to get the killer sunrise......Ill take my dog on this hike...he loves it....
Darren,
It sounds like you have school teacher hours. My wife's a teacher and now I have to go through watching her sleep in with me getting up early and going to work. I went to college to be a teacher but I never finished it up because of finances. Now I sure wish I did.

Yep--I just left my job of 11 years and am going back to school in the fall with the ultimate goal of becoming a teacher. I'd have done it with or without photography, but it will sure be nice to have the summers to click awa.!
