Painted Hills Morning
Hey Folks, I just got back from a family trip out to Sunriver, it was totally epic, I got to go rafting, hiking, biking, swimming, and even photographing. On the last day I decided to get up at 2:30 am and head out to the Painted Hills, I had been watching the weather and saw that the conditions sounded interesting. I got there before sunrise and scouted this section of the monument that I had seen Marc and a few others shoot before, but I had never explored it myself. The sunrise color did not happen because of some clouds blocking the sun, but the sky was very interesting. This shot was taken right as the sun peaked out just a little to brighten the foreground and hills. I was also blessed with no wind this morning, so the grass stayed put.

Anyway this is the first image I've worked on so far.

5D
17-40L + 2 stop ND grad

I'm find myself walking right into this 3-D scene! Well worth the drive Zack.

Nice Zman. Sounds like one helluva trip. I

The sky is interesting, and in general I like everything about the image; however, I think I would have sought to not leave an open space on the lefthandside to create more foreground balance. Too bad the light didn't serve you all that well here. All in all, beautiful.

Zack,

If this image is any indicator of how your overall vacation went, I'd have to conclude it was excellent.

Regards, Simon

Thanks guys. Trevor, I actually have a lot of different comps from this location, some with better balance I'll post those soon as well. I liked the light and the sky in this one in particular though.

Pretty cool as far as PH images go. Comp wise, I wonder if it were possible to move the tripod as to situate that big mound of grass on the left bottom of the frame and away from the center more, then put the colorful hill on the right side of the frame a little more...but then if you did that, then the whole thing would feel left heavy...so this probably is the best comp from here.
I just have one question: What if you entered this in a contest and won?
Posted by Zack Schnepf on July 14, 2007 at 12:28 AM
If I won a contest with this, first I'd be happy, then a little sleepy, then hungry, then a little hot, then I'd go back to work.

What do you mean Rick? I realize I can be a little dense sometimes.

Blessed with great clouds!

Just a side joke...I sent you an email...your not being dense...

Geez Zack! you give the phrase "go back to work to rest up" a whole new meaning!

I really like the 3Dness to this one. And the sky is cool too.

This is nice Zack and I think it would look best printed large for detail in the grass. I don't mind the other grass on the left or the centeredness of the main tuft. To me that is just nature. I wish you would have walked over and yanked that bush, on the left, out of the ground though. I'm guessing that's frowned upon though. The framing of the hills is great.

Hi Zack. That's a fresh image of the Painted Hills. I wish I had half your get-up-and-go (2:30 a.m.). I like the sky in this quite a bit, so don't fret the lack of alpenglow.

Lucky the wind wasn't blowing too hard, Zack. It's a very pleasing image.

Beautiful Zach. Great depth to this.

I see a nice, calming, pleasing photo but nothing is really grabbing me, Zack. I like it but...

The lack of wind really was a nice gift. Cool shot.
