Monitor calibration devices

I'm looking into picking up a monitor calibration device. I have a relatively new Dell Ultrasharp 24" LCD. I've read reviews for the Gretag Eye-One 2 and the Spyder 2, but they're mostly feature discussions rather than performance reviews.

Does anyone have any experience with one or both? What are you using for LCD calibration?

Thanks in advance for any insights!!

Hey Rick,
I use the Eye-One, but have used the Spyder as well. I found the Eye-One to be a bit easier to use and a bit quicker. But either one works well.
Good luck! :wavey:

I also have a Dell Ultrasharp 24" LCD Monitor (2007) + Quad Mac Pro. I use the Monaco XR system and it works great.

Hi Rick, I got a Gretag after my buddy dropped my Spyder on the floor. Having used both, I think Gretag is better and worth the extra money. It seems to give a more neutral calibration; Spyder always had a slightly red cast.

Another vote for Gretag. I use it with my Dell Ultrasharp and it works great.

The performance reviews I've read always seem to rate Spyder the lowest. I use Monaco Optix XR and Gretag seems to be rated high as well.

I also use the Gretag!

I use the Monaco Optix XR on both LCD and CRT and I've been pleased. Now that Monaco owns Gretag, that's probably the only choice from them. But you might find the XR on Ebay. Most of what I've heard about Gretag has been good.

Thanks for the feeback everyone! I'll look into the Gretag and Monaco more closely; one of them will go on my b-day list!!

Rick, shootsmarter.com did a review of the different calibration devices a while back. They rated the eye-one display 2 highly. Might be worth a look.

Stay away from the Spyder; it's been proven to be inaccurate in repeated tests.

All the Gretag-Macbeth and X-Rite/Monaco systems are good; even their lower end packages are adequate for professional use. See if you can find a new-in-box system on eBay; you'll save lots of money, especially on discontinued products like the Monaco Optix XR (which is excellent).

On the topic of displays, I recently bought a new LaCie 319 and have been very pleased.
