Hiked up to Lake Isabelle in the Indian Peaks Wilderness last Wednesday morning for some sunrise photography. I made it with moments to spare. The first light on the Indian Peaks was kinda weak but within 5 minutes the light got a little stronger and warmer. Had the lake to myself. Didn't see anyone else until I literally turned to head back down. There were some flowers in the area, but not as many as I hoped for. I've also linked a horizontal version. Would appreciate hearing if you have a preference between the two. Thanks.

I like it a lot Doug, and nice work with the ND! I much prefer the portrait version, the grass and lines in the foreground really draw me in. :toast:

Doug,

Thanks for posting. I wanted to ask the group if anyone has been there lately. I was there a few weeks ago and wondered if the flowers had sprouted more. If you haven't seen my photos as a comparison you can check them out here:

The flowers weren't as good yet as last summer. Just wondering if things appear to be on the way in or out.

With respects to the images you posted I like both shots for different reasons. I like the vertical because I can see more in the foreground (eg - rocks in the water, grass, etc...). But I like the horizontal for the inclusive of more of that classic Isabelle mountain background and less blue sky. The vertical might crop nicely in a 4x5 perspective. By simply scrolling part of the sky off the screen I tend to like it even more.

Thanks again for posting,

Derek

Very nice, Doug, I'm not surprised that you didn't have much company there for sunrise.

I also prefer the vertical composition.
Now all you need is a colorful batch of wildflowers in fhe foreground.

This is really sweet, Doug - one of your best, imo! The color, compostion, contrast - all are top notch. The curving shoreline makes for a great lead-in to the mountains. Great work with the grad, too - no evidence of it at all.

Great shot! I also like the vertical shot. It is more dramatic.

Ditto on the vertical shot. Nice color and leading lines.

Nice, Doug. The vertical wins with that nice green shoreline!

Very niice, Doug! I like the vertical for the curve of the lake shore. Nice light and color!

The vertical gets my vote! :toast:

Very nice! I love the way the grass leads in...

Looks like we found the exact same spot. I was right there 2 weeks ago. It's interesting to see how much snow has melted since then.

Great shots Doug. I like the landscape shot for the inclusion of more of the mountain range, but it feels out of balance with the uncontained lake on the left. In this respect, the portrait orientation provides a better overall shot.

From Scott's pic, I gotta say wow, that is some major snowmelt!

I like the horisontal shot better. Great light and comp.
