On thursday I'm leaving for a four week trip to Alaska and I still need some photo items like extra batteries for my D2x and D2Xs. I could buy everything here in The Netherlands, but with the Dollar being so low I'd prefer to buy it in Anchorage.
Does anyone know a good camera store in Anchorage with professional equipment? Thanks for any tips!
Stewarts downtown on 4th is about your only choice. I haven't been in there lately - seems like they sell more rocks the camera gear. They won't be competitive price wise with the NY mail order places.
Last time I was at Stewarts, their stock was pretty thin. I'd call ahead, order and prepay what you need if necessary, just to be sure they had it when you got there. If you really need something and they didn't happen to have it on hand, you will be doing without.
Have a good time at McNeil! As you may remember I just returned last week. We had really good weather and had a great time. If you have questions just let me know. One thing I would mention, I really messed up on the food portion of the trip! You do not need to bring camp type food like Mountain House. Most everyone brings pasta or rice that you mix with your boiling water. You can bring canned spaghetti sauce and some shrink wrappped prosciuto. An onion or two will not spoil while you are there but most people had bad luck with carrots. Bring tea bags if you like that sort of thing. If you have enough weight some people even bought bottles of wine and 1/2 dozen eggs.
Like I say, any questions just ask!
Marsel; If you are only needing things like batteries, memory, etc. there is a pretty good assortment of camera supplies at "Best Buy" and also at "Comp USA". Both stores are on Dimond Blvd. almost directly opposite each other and 1 -2 blocks West of the Old Seward Highway. When you leave the airport you are on "Airport Road". Turn right on "Minnesota Drive" and keep going until you find the "Dimond Blvd." exit. Go left on "Dimond Blvd." and you'll find "Best Buy" on the right, just before you approach the "Old Seward Hwy". If you miss the entries into the mall just turn right on the "Old Seward Hwy" and the first right will put you right in front of the entry. The prices at both stores are quite reasonable.
Hope you have lots of great photo opportunities while you're in Alaska
Do you know anyone locally? You can have these items shipped to AK from B&H Camer (bhphotovideo.com) in just days. Have them delivered to a hoel in your name.
If you drive down to the Kenai Peninsula and are still in a bind. I have two D2X batteries that you can use (with deposit) or purchase on your way to Homer. I live in Sterling b/t Cooper Landing and Soldotna. Let me know if I can help.
To Robert - as I need more than just the batteries, I would like to order everything at B&H, but they don't deliver to hotels. I'll be driving down from Anchorage to Homer on sunday the 22nd of july, and I'm passing through Sterling. Would it be an option that I have the things delivered at your place by B&H and that I pick it up on sunday the 22nd? Just send me a PM. Thanks.
