Civil Twilite (REPOSTED)
This seems to be a popular spot here lately, but here is my shot at it. Sparks Lake 15 min before sunrise last Friday. I don't know if this works or not, but I really liked the mist that was forming. Not only across the lake but on my filters as well

Brian, this is outstanding. I think it works very well. Great little touch of color near the peak. I was up on South Sister observing this same sunrise.

Works for me, Brian. I might have looked a hair lower down to give the log a bit more space but still, it's a great shot.

Brian,
popular spot...but still beautiful. The fog/mist works well in this shot, although I'd suggest a crop above that log. That bit of foreground does nothing for me, except if I were to place text there or something.

Attractive photo.

Nice and moody shot. Maybe a little too much cyan, especially in the fog.

Beautiful work

i really like the feel of this photo, the cyan doesn't bother me as that's probably how it would have rendered on velvia (my film) and it makes it look cold, something i associate with sunrise. looking at the trees, the darker clouds, the pink ones, and the fog really captures what sunrise means to me. typically, when i was a wildlife biologist i would see about 75 sunrises a year (yep i was up at 3:30am most of the time) while working and this photo really has that feel to it.

i rarely stood on a lake for sunrise, but this scene has a feel of something i've seen a lot before and i'm going to have to study it a bit more and dig a bit deeper to figure out exactly what it captured and what i see in it.

i guess that's a big part of what makes it art

the log does nothing for me though

Thanks for the great comments. The log is actually a rock sticking out of the water, It's hard to tell on the web copy, but there is quite a few rocks that are visible under the water around the one out of the water. I also agree that the photo does not need the rock in the forground to work. Here is a croped copy, and slightly color adjusted.

Brian try this....

create dupe layer>Blur Average>new curves adjustment layer>click the greypoint pen> click on the image, the image will then turn a more shade of grey>click ok and then delete the background copy.

see what that does for the color.....

I like the scene...very early morning like.....I can almost smell my Yukon Jack and Coffee!

heh, i like the other crop better despite the rock
the bottom of the image puts you more in the scene

I agree with you. I like the original crop. But the intensity of the cyan in the fog maybe somewhere in between the two. Very nice shot.

I sure like the scene, Brian! The first post is really nice because, to me, the darkness in the lower left adds a sense of depth to the image. Also, the splash of pink is a very pleasant surprise among all that beautiful blue. Don't feel I can comment on the color adjustments because that's such a personal preference thing (at least to me...); ID'ing a color cast is altogether different though, and I'm terrible at that!

Thank you all for you comments. I have decided to leave the forground in place, I too like the extra depth it creates. I have also decided on fixing the color cast, but not 100%. ( Thank you Darren for you proceedure). So here is the final copy..

Looks good Brian

I, personally, like the log on the left a bit brighter showing a bit more detail....JMHO

Just sharpen it a hair........it's a bit soft!
