Porcupine ~ Cascade Trail, Indian Peaks Wilderness
I'm not much of a wildlife photographer, but this guy unexpectedly walked right past me as I was setting up a landscape shot. Its been a while since I've seen a porcupine, so I thought I'd share...

Did ya give him a big ole hug as thanks for letting you take his picture?
Great shot Scott. Can't remember the last time I saw a porcupine myself.

Better to see one out on the trail than under your car eatin' on some wires!!!

Cool Scott. Great shot to get the face and really a nice setting all around.
I've got his cousin staying over at my house this week. My mom has a pet hedgehog and they're out of town for a week. At this point, I'm not really sure I'm a big fan of the hedgehog as a pet. Maybe I should introduce him to your friend.

And a stunning composition to boot. Great texture, depth of field. This is awesome!

Funny you should mention that Darren, as the only time I've seen a porcupine here in Colorado was at 3AM, at one of the Maroon Bells campgrounds, and he was making an awful racket under my car, eating who knows what! And of course, our dog was inside the truck with us, more scared than anyone!
I like this shot a lot too. I love how the textures of the quills, twigs and background bokeh play off each other. The only suggestion I might make is to burn the top left corner; the brightness pulls my eye over there and out of the frame.
Nice capture, Scott! Not only did you get a nice shot of the little guy, but the comp is nice and clean, too.
Darren - I was actually thinking of doing just that when I saw the pic loading. So.....I shouldn't tell folks just how far you can launch a porcupine with a set of 3021 legs and gear head?
I know a guy here in Ridgway whose dog just got over 200 quills stuck in him up at Blue Lakes - in his tongue and throat... all over. Had to take the dog to the vet, who put him under while they pulled out all the quills. What a nightmare.
What a neat subject, I love his color which is much lighter and more attractive than the usual dirty brown ones I see. Was he a youngster perhaps? Good thinking to have a dslr with you for these grab shots.

Aww, so dang cute and cuddly! I just wanna go up and give him a hug. Nice shot, Scott.
Couldn't have asked for a better pose or background for a portrait, animal or person. Great catch!
I chased one off the porch the other day.
We used to have a dog that couldn't stay away from them. Vet bills just eat me up when a dog does this and doesn't seem to learn. Let's just say his last visit to the vet was his last. The dog we have now has been stuck once and only once - a little smarter than his predecessor.
