This is my first posting to this Forum. I have been lurking for a couple of months and like what I see. I joined NPN two days ago. I live in Central Missouri and am a Hobbyist photographer. I shoot Canon 20D and Canon Lenses.
This shot was captured in November of '04 right after a snowfall. We got what the locals tell me is a "Hoar" frost and these ice crystals only lasted about 45 minutes.
10D, ISO 200, 125 sec, F/13, zoom at 135mm.
Please critique - I want to learn more about the craft.
Nice post, Merle, and welcome. I might have tried to follow the "rule of thirds" a bit more here, but it still works well. Sometimes, rules are made to be broken...

Welcome Merle! Nice to have you aboard the CSNP juggernaght! I like this high key take on the hoarfrost covered maple leaf. The vivid red really jumps out at you. Well done, looking forward to seeing more!
Hi Merle! Beautiful shot. The hoar frost is exceptional. Does this occur frequently? I don't recall seeing anything so dramatic in this area. My only critique would be that while I like the framing of the leaf with the other elements I would have placed the leaf a little off center. Still, it is a very eye-catching photo.

Welcome, Merle! The detail in this image is really nice. A little centered, maybe, but nice details.
That is some heavy frost. I do not think I have ever seen it spike out that far. Maybe I just do not get out early enough. I love the way the red looks surrounded but the stark white. Nice find! Some of that cold air would feel pretty good now.

Hi Merle,
Great first post! I love the texture of the frost against the red of the leaf.
Thanks all for looking, commenting and the warm welcome. I have only lived in Missouri for seven years and this is the only time I have seen this frost. I was out shooting the snow and saw this on the Maple tree by our barn. We didn't have this in Southern California !!!!! When I captured the leaf I wasn't even thinking about the rule of thirds. I was freezing my bu** off and just wanted to make the shot and get back to the warm. If I had moved the leaf to the right more I would have been able to capture more of the limbs with the green shading under the ice. To bad I didn't think about it at the time, Thanks again for looking and commenting - this is how I will learn.
