Merlin attacking Short-eared Owl
From my recent trip to Varanger, Norway. Technically it's a real pour image, and I would really love to hear some input on how to deal with it in Photoshop.

The SEO was flying around (hunting) and minding it's own business when out of the woods below, a Merlin came like a missile and attacked the Owl, who never saw it coming. Apparently the Merlin had a nest in the woods. I got 4 photos in a sequence. Unfortunately the photos were very underexposed (2 full stops), so I have tried to lighten them before converting in Breezebrowser, and added a bit saturation in photoshop. Well in least the AF worked.... and I was apparently also more alert than the owl:cool:

Any suggestions of what else to do to rescue the image ?

Hi Helge,

You have captured a great bit of behaviour. Not sure but would fill light help here??

I lost a load of Barn Owl images from underexposing, I just couldn't get them to look right so I'm of no use to you on the processing question

Unusual capture though, the SEOwl's I get locally in the autumn are normally very aggressive towards other birds of prey themselves and tend to rule over the hunting areas from the other species with ease.

Excellent behaviour, I have never seen anything like this before.

It'll be hard to extract too much more from this than you have I suspect, especially with the crop as well so I'd just acknowledge it for what it is - an excellent record shot of some great behaviour to have seen and had the speed to even contemplate capturing.

Super behavioural/action image Helge, but I suspect there's little else you could do to improve it any - you could try to resize the main RAW/tiff convertion with GenFractal or the like but I doubt you'll have enough detail.

So all things considered a great action capture :toast:

Brilliant piece of action Helge - shame about the exposure.

Great action shot, amazing. Wish I could help about the rescue of the exposure but...No, I am not able.
