It feels a bit odd to be making this my first event as Event Coordinator, but i guess timing is everything.
I would like you all to please give me feedback, either on this thread, or via email, as to your interest in Volunteering as a group, at Mt Rainier National Park for a weekend project. "Weekend" would be either 1 or 2 days depending on the project. If there is sufficient interest, we'll decide on a weekend, and I'll contact them and get us assigned to a project.
I just got off the phone with Jill Baum who is in charge of scheduling projects and volunteers. They still have a huge amount of work to do from the 2006 storm damage. There are projects that still need volunteers from July 28, right on through Sept. The last weekend of August and beyond is largely unscheduled at this time.
There are projects at Longmire, Paradise, Ohanapachosh (sp?), etc. Jill thought that a trail reroute would be great for our size group.
One great thing about this is, the work day is usually 9-4, during the crappy light, so we'll be free to shoot sunrise and sunset! Also, it's my understanding from reading the website, that during a project, we'll have campsite(s) assigned to us; I do need to verify that with Jill, but I'll do that after I get your feedback.
So please let me know if you're interested, and include the following information:
1. When you can be available
2. What your physical limits are (i.e. I've got dorked-up knees so I can't hike far)
3. Type of project you'd prefer (if you have a preference)
You can get additional information on the volunteer program here
If we can pull this off, it's a terrific way to improve the relationship between the park service and photographers in general, both professional and armature.
Curtis,
I think this is a great idea. I would love to do it but unfortunatly I have alot of stuff going on for the rest of the year. It would nice to see this pan out.
This is an absolutely fantastic idea, I am about a year out of AmeriCorps, and this, trail maintenance, was what I spent half my time doing.
Unfortunately, I'll bet it's a disaster to try and schedule, and the work is a lot harder than one thinks, for just one weekend with non superman bodied types we would need about 10 people to even maintain a mile of existing trail, building a new one is another story though!
You can bet if this pans out I'll try and make it but I fear this idea may be too good to be true
Well there is a decided lack of interest in this idea. This has been up for a week, and I've had 4 responses, one of which is unable to make it due to previous commitments. So I'm going to consider this matter closed for now, and move on to the next event. Maybe I'll try this again next spring. maybe everyone is booked up this year already...?
