Barn Owl ** CHICK UPDATE WITH IMAGE**
same techs as before

Hi All,

This is a shot of him just after he came out of the box from feeding the young a Vole, taken seconds after my previous post.

All comments welcomed and appreciated

Hi Rob,

Nice to see a dry one lol. Great shot but IMHO the flash is a bit harsh & could do with toning down a tad. Looks like the hard work you have put into these Barn Owls have really paid off.

Just a quick question, does the female visit the box?

Vince
Keep up the good work :toast:

Hi Vince,

Did'nt actually see her in two hours of watching last night, I did think it was a bit strange. Why do you ask?? I was expecting to see both adults taking in food.

Exposure reduced by 0.5 in CS2, is this better??

Hi Rob, sometimes the female could be somewhere else sitting on a second clutch with the male left to feed the young & her whislt she is sitting. Keep an eye out for her, if she shows then this will be the only brood from this pair.

Still the exposure doesn't seem right, sorry about that Rob  If you asked me why, I would anser, I don't know, me & tech details clash terribly & I have trouble explaining what I mean. Maybe someone here can explain.

Hi Rob great capture again. I think what Vincent is trying to say that your Flash is a bit strong. Next time you do the Barn Owls experiment with your flash like bracketing at different exposures not the Camera the Flash Gun. :toast:

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your comments.

John will try playing with the flash tonight if it stays dry.

Just to let you all know I was out checking boxes this morning over in north west suffolk, on inspection 4-5 weeks ago there were four young chicks, when we went back today we found and caught both adults in the box, but no chicks, although in the box there was 12 warm eggs so looks like they have lost the first brood and started again, ( see photo of brood patch on female) looking at the female she was already ringed, on checking the her ring number we were stunned to find out she was ringed as a chick in 2005 in Kirby le Soken on the Essex coast nearly 40 miles away!

Also As I said before I was slighty concerned I may have lost a chick but we had a quick look and as you can see all three are doing very well  :jump:

Great images, and great news that the brood are doing well.

Keep up the good work,

Rob - as I said to your last post the BB increases your flash EV by +2 to +3 stops and neither your camera nor flash gun take this into account - unless you compensate your images will always look washed out.
Either reduce your flash output or switch to manual and take the extra stops as either shutter speed or aperture.
