This bird rocked!!....barn owl
I've never caught one of these guys out during the day. I found this bird out at noon, with hazy clouds muting the sun. Taken after a long drive home from a not too exciting canoe trip on Upper Klamath Lake.
After shooting from my car for 45 minutes, I got brave and approached on foot. This bird had no prey, so I think this pose was meant to threaten me.

Wow! What a great opportunity and you nailed it. How close were you able to get? At 400mm, baring a lot of cropping, you were darn close.

Wow! That's an amazing photo, Dan. Incredibly sharp and well-focused for a hand-held shot... beautiful!

AJ, this is about 90% of the original. I cropped a bit from the back of the bird to eliminate an electric pole. I was REALLY close. In avian, I posted a full frame image from a different vantage point.
Thanks for the comments.

Dan, that's a beautiful shot! My wife and I saw you at your Ashland setup over the weekend. It's as pretty in person as it is on the web!
