Lighting Effects Filter is Broke

CS3, Quad Core Mac Pro 3 GHz, 4 Gig RAM, OS 10.4.10...

I run the lighting effects filter and upon choosing a color from the color picker the filter progress bar shows up and just sits there. It sat there overnight without making any progress. I have to force quit to get my system back. I tried the same operation on the same image on my laptop (MacBook Pro) and it completes so fast you can't actually see the progress bar. Any ideas what might cause this? Is my Mac Pro sick?

I'd try the age-old soltware fix. Reinstalling. Never encountered this one before, so that's only a guess.

Yup, I'm on Mac, too. It's rare, but I've had to reinstall software to beat glitches. It's most common with Microsoft software, so I don't feel quite so bad.
