This is another image from my session at the nest box, this time he was sitting on a broken bow near the box. I have had a difficult time trying to clone out the white branch behind him.
Do you guys feel that it enough of a distraction to clone or just leave it as is or bin the image altogether
General cloning in wildlife photography is not good or held in high regard. I think the image looks good. I think the branch on the left is more distracting than the white branch...You can tell it a wild bird. Certainly don't bin it until you get a better/cleaner shot. The whole point on project based species photography is continuous improvement and ending up with 20 really good shots, or that's how I look at it if I get time to do it properly...
The white branch looks fine to me, Rob; in fact, I think it frames the bird rather nicely. Regarding cloning in general: I think it`s your photo, so you can do what you like with it. Probably best to disclose it if you`ve done anything major, though.
Hi Rob. This image looks fine as is, to me anyway. Personally I would draw the line before cloning that massive branch out. I would however have no problems cloning that top right white twig as it comes from nowhere. As Brian said, wait for a better opportunity and as Jeremy said, it's yours so do what you feel comfortable with. That big branch is out of my comfort zone though

Rob - the image looks fine with the branch in question, not a distraction at all.
As John mentioned, the red eye is a bit disconcerting
Tho OoF white twig? top right could go, and perhaps the dark stump encroaching the birds head could be seen as awkward.
But you have to be careful not to go too far I think - this is wildlife photography, not a still life pack shot in the studio.
I think most people do a bit of cloning, I for one would leave this one as is but as long as you are up front i don't mind too much. I was wondering about using a flash on owls, I thought this was a bit of a no no in nature photography as the birds eyes are very sensitive??
