Why so few UK ESS images?

Just out of curiosity is there any reason that landscape and seascape images are few and far between on this forum? The standard of avian and macro work here is outstanding but the UK has such a beautiful landscape that I'm a little surprised there are not more earth sea and sky images here.

The landscape has so much to offer whatever the weather. Last night it rained but I managed to get onto the moors for an hour around sunset. There was no sun but the sky was subtly lit with amazing shades of blue and yellow – such a beautiful sight despite getting soaked.

Tristan,

Simply a great image, I like the B/W version as well.

I would love to see more landscapes posted, really to inspire me, it is often said, but I simply do not have an eye for lanscapes even though I earn my living from photography, believe me I have tried.....

So Please more lanscape images to inspire and to help me learn....

There has certainly been a good selection of landscape images posted on the forum over the years, as well as a great variety of flowers, mammals, insects, etc.
Birds are certainly a particularly popular subject, hence the regularity with which they appear on the forum.
Would certainly be good to see some more landscapes though.
Perhaps you may have started the ball rolling

A fine shot to begin posting with and the way the rocks lead the eye towards the distant horizon works superbly.
All this changeable weather we're having certainly lends itself to some dramatic and moody scenics, as illustrated here.

Look forward to more and welcome to the forum. :toast:

Pardon my ignorance but what is 'ESS' I'm eager to learn more about landscape, can you share your techniques - or at least post the exif for this image will be helpful...

Thanks for the response, it would be great to get the landscapes flowing here. Perhaps everyone interested should post their favourite landscape/seascape shot to start the ball rolling?

Des - ESS is Earth, Sea and Sky. Image details: 17mm lens at f/20 for 15 seconds with a 3stop ND grad to darken the sky. By the way, your website is excellent.

ESS = Earth,Sea and Sky (one of the main gallery categories in the main section of Nature Photographers.

EDIT: Beaten to it.

I agree with you, Tristan; and the lack of landscapes is one of the reasons I don`t look in here much now. I think we should perhaps ban bird photographs for a week or so to encourage people to branch out photographically; but then the forum might be rather quiet! Hopefully you will post a few of your own moody shots (which I have seen from time to time in the main forum) to redress the balance a bit.
Lovely shot, BTW.

You'll always find a heavy weighting towards Avian subjects - that goes for NPN et al. So, there is no reason why ESS shots aren't posted here...other than no-one seems interested in contributing many of them to the forum (including Jeremy :razz:).

It's nice to see ESS shots so please, feel free to post them..the more the merrier, and that goes for other aspects such as environmental, fauna, flora etc. We've had one or two people contributing U/W shots recently - and they are always well recieved.

Hi Tristan

Nice image - love the sky. . I would be happy to put some landscape shots up and would love to see more on this forum. Not a discipline that I have had much success with and would like to learn. Used to be some inspiring stuff from Guy Edwardes and others but heven't seen much for a bit.

Most of my landscape shots are taken with a 5x4 and I don't bother to digitise them. The few I take with the dslr are normally pre large format experiment shots, if they work the 5x4 will come out to play and if they don't they get binned. Certainly landscapes are a much better seller than birds.

Your shot proves the point that you do not need sun to make good landscape shots. Some lovely tones here. My only nit is the scale of the foreground rock, it just seems too imposing.

Malcolm: Excellent, look forward to seeing some of your landscapes. Also I've not come across Guy Edwards before, just looked at his website - he has some great images.

John: That sounds a great way of working. I'd love to experiment with large format someday but time is not on my side with a very young family so I stick to a lightweight camera and brief outings when time allows. It would be great to see some shots if you ever get around to digitising some of them. Very interesting point about the large foreground rock too - appreciated and taken onboard. Thanks, Tristan
