I have a question that I send out to all you Canon users. Are canon lenses designed to only fit on a specific Canon body? I am trying to put together an emergency digital camera kit. I don't wnat to psend alot of money, and I already have a Canon D60 the second digital body they made. I am finding several affordable lenses on ebay but some say they only fit on specific bodies - is that true? I have been a Nikon guy myself, and I know Nikon lenses willl fit on any body they made. Is that not the case with Canon??

Thanks

All EF lenses fit on any EOS camera like your D60. EF-S lenses like the 18-55mm, 17-85mm IS, 10-22mm only fit on newer 1.6x crop digital cameras and will not fit on your D60. Some EF-S lenses can be modified to fit on your D60. I used to use the 17-85mm IS EF-S lens on my 10D until I sold my 10D. At least on the 17-85mm the modification is fairly simple. You need to remove a plastic part on the back of the lens (4 little screws) and replace it with one made for the 24-85mm EF lens. The part only cost me around $10.

Tom is correct to a certain extent. Everything he said about EF versus EF-s is true.

The part he left out is that there is a division between Canon EOS and older Canon FD lenses. The FD lenses cannot be mounted on any EOS body. There is no simple mount adapter for them. They require an optical element in the mount to provide infinity focus and the original Canon ones are supposed to be very difficult to find and expensive, while the third party ones were of poor quality.

On the other hand, many other manufacturers lenses can be used in manual focus on a Canon body if the flange distance for the mount is acceptable. For example, I believe Nikon lenses can be used on Canon bodies with a mount adapter. Olympus and certain Zeiss lenses can be used. The alternative digital forum at fred miranda is very active in adapting lenses from various mounts to Canon bodies.
