I am sitting here trying to figure out which hike to do.....I know Elk cove is supposed to be good right now but a part of the trail is closed due to slides....and going in from the Vista Ridge side seems dangerous....
Going in from Vista Ridge is the way to go, you can't get to Elk Cove from Cloud Cap right now. My 70 year old neighbors are going camping up there tomorrow.

So Mark, do you think this would be a good hike tomorrow.....I guess if your neighbors can do it.....I can!
Heck, I'd go with you if I could. I'm sure a strapping youngster such as yourself should have no problem up there. If you do, wait around till my neighbors get there and they can carry you back down the trail.
They went up Vista Ridge and over to the Wy'East Basin ten days ago and didn't think the flowers were quite ready yet, I think that's why they are going this weekend.

If you do go to Elk Cove and shoot until early evening, I highly recommend timing your return to Vista Ridge to catch the last few rays of sunlight from a lupine meadow that's about 1/2 mile BEYOND the junction with the Vista Ridge trail, just west of Wyeast Basin. Go around the ridge, and drop a bit to this spot - can't miss it. Then hoof it back to the trailhead in whatever light you've got left...
(BTW, the "sky" in this view is actually the bottom of a high overcast, with the setting sun illuminating the bottom of it - weird! This was taken around the last week of July or first part of August in 2005).
Enjoy your trip, Darren - I'll think of you as I toil in a dimly lit conference room tomorrow...
