Hello All, have finally got ahead with all the work stuff and want to take a trip up to Yorkshire for Red Grouse. Can any Yorkshire based people tell me if the heather is in flower yet on the moors?

Much appreciated

North Yorkshire = Nick?

South Yorkshire/ Derbyshire = In north Peaks last weekend the flower was debateable.

As for the Grouse, the issue is I don't think the grouse chicks have survived the wet weather as the insect population is extremely low.
I intend going onto dark peak on Friday so I will update the thread on Friday night. I will also touch base with the gamekeepers and see what they say.

Better now than after the 12th

I've been photographing on the moors around Pately Bridge this week and only saw a few areas that were beginning to flower. It certainly was not in full bloom. Not sure what it is like in other areas though. Tristan

North Yorkshire = Nick?

...Need a passport and visa to venture south of the Tees into Yorkshire so can't speak for Grinton :jump:.... some heather is coming through in Durham, but not a huge amount. As to Red's ... we didn't spot many out last night, but then it wasn't exactly Red territory either.

After this years miserable weather, I'm not so sure it's going to be a good shooting year again...third year on the trot now :frown:.

This is as good as it gets around here - not much is this far on. I'm on a moors landscape mission - taken this evening. Tristan

yes the next two days looks great. I did suspect that the bad weather would really hit the grouse and I wonder too about the number of predators and what the effect that has on the grouse. Certainly with the black grouse it has a huge effect. Anyway thanks for all the great replies, I will start to drop by here more often to see if I can reciprocate.

Where is the best place to photograph Grouse - Red or Black?
Posted by Tom_W on August 5, 2007 at 11:56 AM
The easiest fro a car is Grinton Lodge, from the road, very early morning.
The best (also from a car) is outside The Leicht ski center in Scotland.
