Weisendanger Falls
I believe I have the falls named right (on Larch Mt trail), but I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong. Been on NPN for almost 2 months but this is my first post on PNWNP.

I am curious to get thoughts on this image from other photographers. Shortly after I shot it I had folks (non photographer clients say they love it, selling a couple 20x30 prints as well). Now, it seems busy to me, so I am curious on any feedback. It was taken last December after our crazy rains of Nov so I know a lot of the "mess" at the bottom of the falls is probably from the heavy water flow but have not photographed this falls enough to know.

It definitely has that offseason look: little foliage and distinct coolness. The exposure is great. I would try to eliminate the blue cast.

Compositionally, it is a bit right weighted. I can uderstand the difficulty of composing during that time of the year, as the ground isn't all that conducive to photography. I think you did the best with what you had at the given focal length; I would have been prone to trying to isolate the falls more.

I would agree with you that it is busy- more like junky- in the foregroud. Then again, I like the way you captured the water flow in the creek below the falls. The falls make a really straight plunge, that's for sure, and right down the middle of the frame. That you sold 2 copies at such a large size- well we all hope to do that! In conclusion, it's a mixed bag for me, Adrian, and I am glad for your success with this image. Keep shooting and posting. Let's see more of your work.

The composition is okay, certainly nothing spectacular for this spot, and yes, the blue cast is quite distracting, but you've got a good start here.

Thanks for the helpful feedback. I agree that the cast is a little blue here. Here is a repost, hopefully a little better. My struggle with the comp is that I wanted that water going past the stump and the waterfall in the background. Given the higher water and steep saturated ground next to me it was not really a option to get down much lower. At least I know what I will do next time I am there (get wet and muddy if I have to)!

Adrian

having photographed this falls before I know the troubles you have with comps and debris....the debris is still there as of 3 months ago...because of all the junk this is a waterfall to be shot from above or down below in the creek....

the color is still off on the repost but should be easily adjusted if you want me to give it a shot....

now after seeing this I think I will go back and look at my files to see what I got!

Darren, thanks for the comments. If you want to give it a shot by all means. My monitor used to be calibrated but I think it's off now as what is in the post still has more blue than what I saw in PS. And I have had other ghosting issues so I know I need to replace this thing.

I hope to get back up there again in the near future and will try to reshoot this.

Ok Adrian, here is my take....about 2 min in photoshop....let me know what you think.....thanks!

The only thing I don't like is the stump in the middle because it disrupts the flow...of the image. To me, the leafless, drab surroundings set a mood. Darren's edit really helps interpret the color and mood. I'm also liking the bevel/drop shadow effect (obviously inconsequential to the scene but a nice presentation). I've been noticing it on Jeremy's shots.

and based on this thread alone....after reviewing my shots of it...the was the best I could come up with.....so I need to get back up there in the fall and shoot this one again.....Adrian, wanna make some plans for a fall trip???

That looks like a tough one to shoot, guys. I'll be interested to see what you come up with this Fall.

This falls is so pretty, and I've photographed it a few times, but can never get a sharp shot due to the wind coming off it. Some bit of foliage always moves. In the spring, there are some nice purple flowers on stalks, and in the Autumn there is an awesome yellow/brown tree just across the stream. There is lots to work with here, though. I'm not partial to the bare winter look of this falls, but if you sold a couple of large prints of it already, I think that's proof enough that it works for some!

By the way, welcome to the forum and thanks for posting!

Cheers,
