Does anyone know what this is ? It was rather big - about 4cm (1 3/4" in old money); the shinning black armour has an irresdescent blue sheen, and the tip of abodomen is lightly coloured in orange on the underside.

Hi Des,

Looks to me to be a Bloody Nosed Beetle (Timarcha tenebricosa) although from your description it is a large one they are normally about 25mm.

Nicely seen and taken

Can't fault this shot at all - composition really elevates it . Great image.

Hello Des
I've been back to this a coup-le of times and really like it. Your composition is spot on, it really emphasises the way this guy is hanging on, and I think your processing is spot on. Altogether a well seen and well taken image, which I like a lot.
Best wishes
