I will be in Tanzania on safari in September and at the beginning of the trip i will have 3 free days at leisure. I will be based in Arusha. Some of the parks i plan to visit later in the trip include: Massai Mara Reserve, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, Arusha NP, Kilimanjaro. I would love some advice on trip options for those 3 days. I would like to do some landscape photography since 90% of the trip will be about wildlife. Also, I would be interested in cultural visits, trekking/hiking, etc. - I am open to just about anything.
Looks like a good trip. I was to be there now, but I backed out due to home issues. My travel partner is over there now. Tanzi, Kenya and climbing Kili. She will be back on the 19th, if you'd like some info, I can ask what she recommends. How far is Zanzibar from Arusha ... would be worth the trip.

I was there in February this year as part of a photo safari with Andy Biggs. Was mainly in Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengetti, but we did spend a little time in Arusha. There is one crafts store we went to that's probably worth visiting (called "Cultural Heritage", if memory serves); they had just about any locally made item you can think of. A bit pricey, but it looked like good stuff and the large store was even air conditioned (they even took credit cards...one of the very few places to do so).
You might want to look up Andy (www.andybiggs.com), as he has lead a lot of safaris in Northern Tanzania and has on occasion visited some off-the-beaten-path places around Arusha. Very friendly guy - I'm sure he'd be happy to suggest a few places to visit.
