I just got a brand new Canon 5d with two brand new lenses (all from reputable places) and I get an err 01 message (camera and lens not communicating) on both lenses. Any ideas anyone???

"Error 01 Communication between the camera and lens is faulty clean the contacts"

What brand lenses have you purchased? It would seem either the camera or the lenses are faulty If the lenses are Sigma they may have been old stock and require a firmware update to be compatible ?? Unlikely but a possibility. IF you have any other canon lenses do they work?
Hope this helps.

Try removing the battery and putting it back in.

Both are tamron. I don't have any other lenses because I am switching from Nikon....

Do you Know anyone local who has a late model canon camera who would allow you to try a lens or else try you lenses on their body so as to Isolate where the problem is?

Try Richards suggestion but is likely either the contacts are not lining up properly or you have a faulty Camera :frown:

Visit your local camera store ostensibly to try out a new lens
that will tell you if its the lenses or the camera, I rather suspect that Canons attitude will be that its the Tamron lenses (Cause you should not use the oppositions)
Hence you will need to prove for yourself if that is the case so you can decide which needs to be sent back first.

When I bought the Canon 100 macro and put it on each of my three bodies for the first time, I got the same error message. With the lens still on the camera, I'd shut it down, remove and replace the batteries and then power up again, and no error message. I've used the lens often on each body since then with no problems. Almost like the lens and camera had some sort of slight communication barrier at the beginning and pulling and putting back the batteries helped them talk better. Unfortunately, they weren't 5D bodies (I wish). They were the 30D, 20D and the XT.

I just took it to the shop and of course they didn't have any canon lenses. But another brand new tamron lens didn't work. Off to the canon authorized service dealer tomorrow. I'm starting to want my nikon back....

Well don't give up on Canon yet  (Im sure there are nikon users who have had problems too)

I also have the 5D but no problems and have had the 10D and two Eos film bodies no problems with any of them. I did and still have a problem with a early model Sigma 500 F4.5 which cannot be upgraded for love or money :frown: an expensive paper weight
