Eastern Wyoming advice?

I happen to be driving up to Casper from Denver this weekend to do some architectural photography. I know so little about that area- do you know more? The guidebook I scanned mentioned little else but "barren, desert country." Specifically, I'm curious about special scenic spots within an hour's drive of Casper, or on the way up from Cheyenne. Also any advice about tent camping in the Casper vicinity would be appreciated.

My slim experience tells me you can take a fine landscape almost anywhere in Wyoming, it's so big and unspoiled. But are there any places I'd kick myself for overlooking (or neglecting to look over).

You might find this place interesting:

Kind of a miniature bad lands.

Vedauwoo, between Cheyenne and Laramie, is probably worth the short detour.

I'll second Mark's recommendation. I haven't visit Vedauwoo myself, but came across some images from Brett Deacon's site when researching a different WY location. It's a few hours from Casper, but would be on your way up there from Cheyenne. Can't be of much help with the camping question, unfortunately.

Vedauwoo, although spectacular, is not close to Casper. I would probably get a map and go for a long drive around the Thunder Basin National Grassland; or, the Laramie Mountains. There's plenty of diversity in the area and I would probably try to make the point (photographically) that it's not dry, barren, desert.

SSSShhhhh! We like people thinking that. Keeps WY from turning into another Colorado.
