Yoho National Park (with repost)
I'm finally getting around to scanning my 4x5s from Canada. Most of them are dupes of the digital images that I already put on my website, but this is one that I captured only on film. This area is just downstream of the main attraction which is a natural bridge. The bridge was nice, but this scene was more to my liking. The color of the water and the rock fins seemed to make a good foreground for the formation and trees in the background.

Suggestions and critiques welcome!

Beautiful!!! Was the water color really that light?

Rick,

Nice shot. Makes me look forward to heading up there again in a few weeks. Did you hit Takkakaw while you were in Yoho?

I might crop this one a little differently you have all the material here to make a great shot and since it is on 4x5 you have the real estate too. My crop would probably start 1/4 in from left and top and zoom to current botttom right. The center rock doesnt create enough tension for me the way it is and i dont like the dead trees in the background either. The water is great and the detail of the trees right above the rock are great too. I would emphasize those.

I like the color of the rock and the water is great! You probably have a few crop options, I think I'd come up from the bottom a little too.

Beautiful place.

Wow, that water is a beautiful blue. I'm okay with how its framed here. I'm sure the cropping suggestions above would work as well. Looking forward to seeing some more Rick. :toast:

This is a subtle, yet not-so-subtle beauty, Rick. The textures of that beautiful water and the rocks is just gorgeous.

I like the comp, colors, contrast, and sharpness. Yep, a beautiful photo. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions!

Derek - the water is really that color. And not just at this spot; pretty much all of the water up there is remarkably colorful. Depending on the light and depth of the water, it ranges from emerald to turquois to cyan, and those colors come in all sorts of shades as the light changes. Here the water is pretty shallow, so it takes on a translucent cyan hue in that far channel; in the foreground, the water is so shallow (you can see the river bed through it) that it loses much of its color.

Rich - we didn't get up to Takakkaw Falls; the road was closed pretty far down and none of us felt like a long walk that day. Darren did make it up there after we came home and he has a pretty sweet pic on his Canada page.

Regarding a crop, the dead trees definitely aren't ideal, but obviously impossible to avoid. I think the crop demphasizes them though, and also puts the rock fins in a stronger position. The beach area on the left in the original lends some depth to the scene, so losing it is a trade-off; maybe the rock fins are enough to create some relief?

Rick,

Yeah - this is what was going through my head when i was thinking of the crop. I really like this.

I checked out the Takakaw shot. Cant wait to see it all again.

Rick – that is a fantastic image. I really like the subtle colors of the rocks and trees in relation to the light cyan of the water. Personally I can’t stand (N)Astia, but those colors area absolutely gorgeous. I also much prefer the un-cropped (original) version. You need a large print on a new HP??

Gorgeous colors. I do prefer the first version. It might be be able to use a bit of cropping, but the second one is cropped a bit too much on each side for my liking. If it were me, I'd probably crop a bit off the top and a tiny bit of the left and bottom.

Both are very nice.

But I agree with Grant and Rene about the first image. For me it adds more to the story, personality and interest to the shot. Maybe just a 'little' off the left and the top would draw the viewer in to the rocks and beautiful water without removing the beach.
