Is this Trillium Lake? As far as a star trail party, this wouldn't be a good spot. Timberline Lodge would completely white out the mountain at night (tried it once ). I've been told the other side of the mountain is better. Let me know when and where you plan to be, though!
As for the pic, it kinda looks Ortonized, but a darker version of the usual??? It's nice to see what the lake looks like again. I haven't been there in at least 2 years.

Hey Kevin! I guess I worded that wrong, I wasn't saying that this would be a good place for Star trails. I was just saying that I found this scene while we were driving around looking for places....
I like to call this "soft focus" which it really is...the technique is just called Orton..In Paint Shop Pro there is a "soft focus" filter that does the exact same thing.....
Not sure where I will be for the star trails next weekend..I just hope the clouds burn off and give us a clear sky!

Geez, there is barely any snow on that mountain... Good use of that spread out contrail in the sky. I like the framing. The leaves in the BR corner and the contrails to the left of the mountain distract me a bit. Crater Lake would be a good spot for star trails as long as you are out of car headlight range.

The south side of Hood is tough - very brown this time of year, and bad light for most of the day. But it's a great early morning or early evening subject, when the relief on the mountain stands out a bit (lots of little ravines running down through the trees that you can't pick out in midday). This scene, in particular, is a very good morning shot, with the forest at the base of the mountain and on the ridge to the left nicely illuminated. The contrails are a tough call, too - the one running out from the center of the mountain has begun to break up and resemble a "natural" cloud, but the set on the right are pretty jarring. Nice clouds along the west flank, though!
This view looks to be from the edge of the dam, and you can get some very nice reflections in this spot in the right conditions. But there's also a terrific view from near the boat launch (in the campground) that puts a series of shoreline wetlands in the scene -- again, a morning shot (usually around 8 or 9 AM in mid-July for me). BTW, there's a Cokin filter somewhere in that brush along the lake...
Darren, A little different then the normal, I like it. Did I already suggest Larch Mtn. OR as a spot. If you want to get more remote, I camped with my VW Bus group this spring in a group camp area at Brooks Memorial State park, about 15 Miles North of Goldendale. Nice open field with Water big fire pit(for before or after). We could all camp over and spend the night .
Might as well add photo.

I second Mike's comment about the bare mountain. I know it get's brown in later summer but seems a little earlier than normal. I was doing a big wedding last night on this huge property in Sandy with views of Hood. I almost missed the mt top at first as it come from the clouds as this dark rocky thing blending into the sky!
As for the image, I like it except for one item.... I just don't like the well defined jet trails in the LR corner. I know there is not much you can do when they are there. I tend to get all riled up when I see a jet coming into my comp.
Not sure I can join in the star trails get together, but sounds like fun. Look forward to seeing what you guys come home with though!

Not feeling this one Mr D. The sky is too polarized and the treeline is way too dark. It's a nice snapshot, but that's about all I personally feel here.
This is a location I had planned to shoot some star trails this summer, hopefully getting some of the reflections too.

Kind of echo Rick's "tellin' it like it is..." comments. The sky is great but the super dark blue just Left of the cloud is bothersome to me. I need more detail in some of the trees too. Probably would be a sweet spot for star trails or meteor shower shots....

Well, I want to like it but I kept coming back to not liking the dark area in the sky, the real dark trees and the branches on the left. I still want to like it but I can't get past those problems.

Don't worry guys, you don't have to like it...I did not ask you to like it...and I don't need you to like it....I just wanted your comments and that's what you gave me......so, for that I appreciate your honesty....
I, personally, like the dark blue sky, I like how the mountain pops out as the evening light shines down on it and the warm glow touches the grasses on the right hand side....
I am not about 100% perfection in the tonal range like Marc or Eric Good and some others...I like a little Light and Dark in my images......but thats just me personally!!!!...I also like the clouds....cause I am a cloud person and thats was what drew me to this scene in the first place...
I got another one Ill toss up here for you guys to rip apart pretty soon.......you guys can have some fun with that one!

It kind of looks like the sky might be over polarized. Not a bad shot though.
