Help. What does Digital Enhancement digital retouch mean? To me, if I colour correct, usr curves, LAB, or change the photo by means of any adjustments, thats digital enhancement, digital retouch and when displaying on portfolio I always check that box. But--I see photos that I know has been improved with photo adjustment, but the box none is checked.I don't think I have ever taken a photo that I didn't feel that some adjustment was needed, but maybe I'm being toooo ticky about this and sometimes I check when not needed. What is the general rule of thumb and being honest for checking this box?

If I understand your question Jackie, I think NPN's standard has evolved to mean changes such as additions or subtractions of subject matter, along with major color changes such as sunsets. The things you list are mostly considered normal photo processing I think.

My confusion about your question centers around venue: Are you just talking about NPN or including other places as well? The answer can differ from one application to the next. We regularly enhance or retouch portraits from our studio in the "NPN" sense, removing skin blemishes, replacing heads in group portraits, blurring backgrounds, etc. On the other hand, when we shoot editorial the standard is for little more than sharpening or correction of color casts.

Jackie - Are you referring to the choices given when posting on PhotoPortfolios? If so, then there is a definition page (there's a link above the choices). Obviously, even within their definitions there is some gray area, but most of the things you mentioned fall under "None". Anyway, here's what it says :

Digital Enhancement

* None (None) - Other than cropping, minor tonal/contrast adjustments, cloning removal of dust spots and sharpening, no post-shutter digital enhancement
* Digital Retouch (DR) - Minor digital touch-up work, including all of the above plus cloning removal of red eye, lens flare and other imperfections of the photographic capture process
* Digital Composite/Illustration (DC/I) - Extensive digital enhancement, including all of the above plus composites of multiple images, cloning removal of elements in the original scene, etc. Image remains a realistic illustration (not Photo Art).

My Bad, Thanks Hank and David. Cleared up a lot of questions as to if I was posting photos in NPN Portfolio correctly.
