I purchased this lens new about 4-5 months ago. Lately I have noticed that the lens makes a high pitch squeaking sound when focusing, more evident the larger the focus change. The focus mechanism also sounds "dry" to me, almost granular. Maybe the term Silent Wave is a misnomer, but I find the lense irritatingly noisy. My 70-200 VR Nikon doesn't make this sound. I would appreciate your thoughts on this, problem ? no problem?

Hey
I've never had this happen to any of my lenses, but people say that this happens before the AF-S unit fails (however, the liftime of these motors is more like 5 years than 5 months usually). So, if you purchased new and still have warranty, I'd have it checked by Nikon (if not immediately, then certainly before the warranty runs out).

I've owned the 200-400VR for about 18 months now and have never noticed anything like you describe. I would send it in and have it checked.

Just for the heck of it, I would try the lens on another camera and see if it does the same.
I love this lens and have had no trouble at all with it, and use it very often. Have you been in a sandy or windy area? sounds as if there might be some grains of sand that got into it -this happened to a friend. Got some great shots of terns fighting the wind, but had a pretty big repair bill.
Hope that's not the case here... but surely send it in for repair.
