Submitting to multiple Magazines

I've been thinking a lot lately about submitting my work to various magazines, either via a CD or making a website. My question is, there are several magazines that could use the type of photos that I take. Can I send the same pictures to multiple places, or should I send them to one magazine at a time and wait for a rejection before sending them to someone else?

If I sell a photo to one magazine, and a week later, another contacts me wanting to buy the same shot, can I sell it to them as well?

Most magazines do not request exclusive rights so you could but..... if you sold the same image to competing similar publications at the same time without them knowing it I wouldn't expect them to be future buyers! I once had Audubon use an Alaskan Brown Bear in their engagement calendar. A short time later I had Greenpeace (done by the same publisher) contact me about using almost the same image in their engagement calendar. I told them to check with their other dept that was doing the Audubon one before doing anything. They both ended up using them but that was after I let them know about it and it was their choice. Right now I have a number of images an upcoming Dec issue and when making submissions to similar magazines I make sure to not include those or very similar ones.

Hope this helps.

If a Magazine wants exclusive rights, do you charge extra?

Absolutely. You will find your best photos will sell over and over - to have to pull them off the market could cost you a lot in lost sales, you need to be compensated for it.

I would only send the same pics to different mags if their distribution doesn't overlap in either time or geography.
