I've always wanted to shoot elk (with my camera, of course) but don't know when or where to go for good chances at finding them. Fortunately, I can do a really accurate bull elk bugle (and I can do a cow-call, too). Does anybody regularly photograph elk? Are you willing to share any tips or locations?

I never photograph Elk. Many reasons for that, but I can tell you were to find them. The road to Mount Saint Helens, Johnston Ridge Observatory, first thing in the morning, you will almost undoubtably find them. I've never driven the road in the early morning and not seen them. Between Eco Lodge and Clearwater Lake would probably be your best bet.

The Jewell Nature Preserve near Astoria and Dean Creek viewing area at Reedsport are sure bets...

Check out Ecola State Park just North of Cannon Beach. They are usually there in the mornings and evenings.

I'll second the Jewell Nature Preserve.

Great - thank you, everybody! I adore elk and would love to spend some time photographing them. They're so majestic and graceful. Hopefully soon I'll be able to make it happen! Thanks for the location tips. :)

Not sure where you're located, but the Quinault River valley just upstream of the lake is crawling with them. The setting is pretty awesome out there. (Not like Ecola or St. Helens are anything to sneer at.)

Hope to see how things turn out for you.
