Moraine Lake B&W
I took just a few photos at this place...

This was from our second sunrise at Moraine Lake. After an incredible first visit, we figured why not hit it again. The photo gods weren't offended by our greed, and treated us to great light and interesting clouds for a second time.

This is a b&w conversion of this photo. I did a filtered b&w conversion using a red filter in Picasa, then made final adjustments in PS.

Nikon D2X, 17-35mm/2.8

The color version is beautiful Rick, but I like this version even better! I really like the dark mountains on the left side. Nice contrast with the snow patterns. But to me those clouds really make this great. Seeing all these images from your trip makes me want to get up there even more.

I much prefer this version, wow nice shot Rick - I love all the subtle tonalities. Any chance you have one with more of the reflection it in as well?

Gorgeous B&W. It has a very classic look to it. Nicely done.

B/W is way better in my opinion. There is some great contrast here and the clouds are fantastic.

The BW is just stunning with all the cloud detail. Your body of work from this trip is mind-boggling.

Likewise all the above for me. I really like the b&w.

The reflection in the color version is almost b&w already.

Very nice. I like the color version better though.

Wow ohhh Wow. I thought your Tangle BW was nice, but this one takes the prize. This BW just crushes the color one for impact. Terrific job on the conversion. Care to share you secret sauce?

Excellet conversion. Alpenglow conversions usually don't work too well. The clouds really make the b/w for me. Even more dramatic than the color version.

Thanks for the kind words!

Craig - not much to the secret sauce I'm afraid. I typically use Picasa (free from Google) to mock up an image, making quick adjustments/conversions to see, roughly, how they'll look before going to the trouble of pulling them into PS for editing. In this case, I took the color version of the image, applied Picasa's Filtered B&W effect, selected a red filter, and that was most of the work. It was so close to what I wanted that I kept the converted Picasa version, opened that in PS, and did some minor dodging/burning. Some images need more work than others; this just happened to be an easy one to optimize and took about 5 minutes. The Tangle Falls image took much longer becuase there was very, very little contrast to start with. It took a while to coax it out, starting with the channel mixer and a lot of delicate dodging/burning.

Paul - this is as wide as I could've shot (17-35mm I think). If I'd have had my 12-24 on there, I could've squeezed it in and still kept the sky. I don't often go for full reflection shots as they just don't appeal to me as much as other compositions - something about filling the bottom of the frame with the same exact information that's in the top of the frame I suppose..... In this case, though, with those clouds, it might have made for a dramatic effect.

YUM! This is a beautiful B&W. I prefer it much more than the color version. Much more drama in B&W. Well done!
