I'm quite new to photography, but have the desire to learn.

I like the way the black background makes the butterfly stand out.

Welcome to the forum and a very eye-catching image to begin with.
The simplicity of the shot works really well and as you say the black background really allows the main subject to stand out, particularly with the warm well lit colur of the wings and the light coloured grass stem.
A lighter background would work well for a more natural looking image of the butterfly in it's surroundings, but from an artistic point of view this style has the edge,IMHO. All depends what end result you're aiming to portray as to which type of image works best.

Look forward to more.

Thanks John,
Justin,As I say I'm new to photography, only had an dslr since december,so my style is a bit undetermined, but I am probably more artist than technical.

Stu.

Forgot to mention,shot taken with eos 400d + 100-400L.

This is really nice Stuart - great detail in the insect, good composition and I like the contrast between the grass head and the dark bg. Look forward to seeing more.
